My favourite restaurant for chinese cuisine in Johor Bahru. Article written by Dr. Jewel Nambiar, The Theoretical Doctor.

I am a major foodie, hence this is a tough question for me.

By being major foodie, I meant that I LOVE to eat. But isn’t that the very definition of being a foodie?

I grew up in Johor Bahru, Malaysia and back then, before the cafe explosion around 2015 and the emergent of new and various restaurants after that, the choices of restaurants were few. This is not to say that the choices were scarce but we knew which restaurants were where for certain cuisines and so on.

Hence, if I were to pick a particular favourite restaurant, since there are many restaurants that I could list out, I would pick this particular one, Restoran Ah Meng, situated at Jalan Sultanah Aminah, Taman Iskandar.

It’s not really the restaurant but the chef and the owner.

Before the emergent of this restaurant, the owner was working with her father in his own restaurant, Restoran Ah Kaw situated in Taman Pelangi. Back then, me and my parents lived near Taman Pelangi and we would eat there almost every week. The regular dish we would order would be their mee hoon goreng (fried noodles).

Personally, I am not a big fan of the thin noodles (mee hoon) and I usually eat every kind of noodles but that. Not even in soup or curry. But the style that her dad or husband makes is one of a kind and really delicious that I could eat tons of it in one sitting. I remembered there were days where we would just order fried noodles and nothing else because we weren’t too hungry.

On days where we could really eat, there would be a variety of seafood dishes that we would order and each and every one of them were always good.

After working in her father’s restaurant for a good amount of years, the owner and her husband decided to venture out and start their own business. It took them some time, hopping from one restaurant to the next before finally settling and opening this particular restaurant in Taman Iskandar.

Albeit the amount of restaurants available today with as equally good food and a variety of cuisine. This particular restaurant is my go to any day.
