The one decision I made in the past that has helped me to learn and grow. Article written by Dr. Jewel Nambiar, The Theoretical Doctor.

Well a lot of decisions actually.

Growing up, I loved reading books. Anything from fiction to non-fiction. As I grew older, I started reading more non-fiction books mainly on health and occasionally self-development. When I graduated high school, I started listening to various podcasts. I had just received my very first phone as a gift from my parents and there was this purple and white application.

Out of curiosity, I opened it and started listening to various topics from various stations. As I entered medical school, my leisure reading diminishes drastically and I find that I occasionally listen to podcasts.

However, towards the end of my fourth year of medical school or maybe during the early phase of my final year, I decided to consistently listen to audiobooks on self-development. I was going through a phase with multiple highs and lows and I needed to do something about it. I’ve watched a lot of videos by various YouTubers who’ve recommended various books and how it has helped them.

Thus, I started listening and it was addicting. I would listen to them as I was carrying out my chores or during my walks or on my way to classes or hospital and even during the commute.

How has that helped me learn and grow?

One book is a good start to make a tiny change in your life because you will try to implement at least one out of all the lessons taught in it. But imagine binge-listening to multiple just because you are breaking down and desperate for a change in your life.

Based on various books, it taught me how to shift my mindset about how I evaluated myself, rebuild my self-esteem, how to communicate effectively or how to deal with certain people. It also taught me financial education as well as patience and to be forgiving towards others. Mainly, it taught me discipline.

Discipline is a habit that I struggle with till today. I try my best to just show up consistently, for that in itself is discipline and some days I definitely do not have the motivation to just show up in whatever areas I am working on in my life. Some days are easier but some days are not. Eventually, this consistency became a habit and something that I am tuned to.

I guess I am a creature of habit.

Besides that, I am a person who needs immediate results. I live for instant gratification and rarely have patience to wait for a particular outcome. However, that isn’t how things are in life, is it?

Thus, listening to audiobooks on self-development on a regular basis definitely helped me learn and grow in various aspects of my life.

Although only a short duration has passed, probably a little over a year but the values and lessons I have learned is enormous and I am still trying my best to inculcate most of what I have learned in various aspects of my life.

I do forget some of them over time as I do not journal while listening but I love listening to it again after a certain time has passed.

Perhaps this may be of some value to you too.
