Topics I like to discuss. Written by Dr. Jewel Nambiar, The Theoretical Doctor.

I don’t really consider myself a person who likes to talk so much. It depends. There are times when I feel like I talk too much.

I guess that depends on the person I’m talking to. Naturally, I’m more of a listener.

Basically it all comes down to the person I’m talking to. If I get along with them, we could talk about literally anything.

However, most of the time, I find myself listening to how their day went, the struggles they face at work or with their family members and sometimes the good stuffs that happens in their life. I consider myself lucky to be included in their inner circle for them to even be vulnerable and to share that aspect of their life with me. Hence, I often find myself advising them.

But the main purpose of this article is for me answer the prompt given which is on topics that I like to discuss. Thus, here are a few that I am interested in.

1. Health

Maybe because I studied medicine.

I dislike talking about my future plans with other doctors or seniors. However, I do enjoy talking about the disease itself in terms of educating others and trying to get them to understand in simple terms as sometimes we could get lost in our medical jargons that we forget that not everyone actually understands what certain things actually means.

2. Self-Development

I went through a phase where I was binge listening to audiobooks whenever I could on self-development. I’d like to think that I have come a long way than what I was when I first started but I know that there is so much more for me to learn and grow.

Hence, when it came to dealing with a particular situation, I find myself enjoying learning how to cope, how it affects a person psychologically, how they came to be as such and finally how we can deal with it.

3. Religion

I love learning about religion. That doesn’t mean that I am interested in converting into other religions. Personally, I am very strong in my faith and beliefs but I’d like to keep an open mind and to learn new values which I could incorporate in my life. After all, I live in Malaysia, which is a country filled with diversity in terms of ethnicity and religion. The only way we are able to live in harmony is by understanding one another.

4. History

I could never get enough of history. There’s just so much to know and learn.

I’m not a museum junkie but I love to listen to stories especially from the elderly. I feel that there is just so much to learn and absorb which you can’t really find from textbooks in school. Everything we have learnt then was just a scratch of the surface.

5. Psychology

Usually when my friends bring up a topic about a certain individual that is well, making their life a little less better, I try to understand from the other person’s perspective and analyse how this person came to be as such. It helps me detach from my personal emotions towards them as well as keeping an open mind and I find that I am able to talk to them with much patience.

These are just the few topics I can think off-hand that I enjoy discussing about.

However, the commonality in all of these is that, I like to dive into the root of the cause or events be it in health, self-development, religion, history or psychology. With the right individual or group, I could have a discussion for hours.
