I’m a morning person.
If you’ve read my previous blogs, you would notice that I’ve mentioned this a couple of times in a few of my previous posts.
Identifying the most productive time of the day of an individual is crucial as it is the time you would be at your peak of performance thus enabling you to schedule your most important task at hand during that time to ensure maximal concentration is given to the task at hand.
Personally, my most productive time of the day is in the morning. I would usually schedule my day the night before and I would have a template on things I would like to accomplish during that week and segregate them accordingly to certain days while blocking out specific times for certain upcoming events and scheduling my day around that.
However, things may not go according to plan. Hence, the night before is when I usually list down my tasks at hand for the following day.
Since morning is my most productive time of the day, I would start with the most difficult things at hand that requires my maximum concentration. For example, writing. I love to write and personally, I could write at any time of the day. However, I noticed that right after I wake up, after the brain fog of course, I could write a long article provided I am not distracted by anyone. Usually, my mom would still be asleep and my dad would go for his regular morning walks. Thus, I could write peacefully. I find that my ideas tend to flow and as I write, more writing ideas keep popping up for my upcoming articles.
Writing becomes tough when I’m distracted. There are times when there is something playing in the background and the volume reaches a decibel that is just ear piercing. In addition to that, writing also becomes tough when I’m tired. I may have all these random ideas and a plot ready in my head however the spirit is willing but the flesh is weak, if you know what I mean.
Besides that, morning is usually when I get chores out of the way such as vacuuming or washing as well as drying the clothes outside. I simply cannot stand dusts. Thankfully, I do not suffer from asthma. However, the sight of hair strands and dusts just irks me and somehow makes me uncomfortable and affects my productivity of the day. Hence, in order for me to carry out my plans efficiently for the day, I usually vacuum in the morning after breakfast followed by the occasional weekly mop.
Mornings are also when I would do yoga or any form of exercise. I love walking. For me, it is the most fun way to exercise and I could do it at any time of the day. Yoga is good too. I’m not a gym person. However, I find that I tend to procrastinate these activities and leave it till the evening and in the evening, I would be too spent to even do it and thus, pushing it off to the following day. Although it is hard for me to do that first thing in the morning, I find that if I were to get that out of the way in the morning, I would have extra energy all throughout the day hence boosting my productivity. After all, I only do 20 minutes per yoga session. But 20 minutes can seem like an hour long for me.
In addition to being productive in the morning, there are days when I would simply get up early. Most of it purely out of habit as back in medical school, I used to wake up at 4am to tune myself for the day, go for my morning walk or yoga, prepare breakfast and start studying before heading to class or the hospital. However, as I have graduated, I find that by getting up early, I have more time during the day. Perhaps it is also out of self-satisfaction since I would usually be the first to wake up and the last to go to sleep.
I know this is unhealthy in the long term but I am a light sleeper and I simply find it difficult to fall asleep and stay asleep.
Thus, my most productive time of the day would be mornings followed by the afternoon slump where my energy just goes downhill before increasing again in the evenings.
