I believe that I have just recently mentioned in another post that I dislike talking about my career plans to others.
My career plans…
Well, I studied Medicine. I have graduated. Theoretically a doctor, on paper yes, practicing? No. However, a doctor nonetheless.
At the time of writing this post, I am still waiting for my placement of internship. It has been 5 months since I’ve placed my application to serve in the Malaysian Ministry of Health and begin my housemanship period.
Upon our commencement of housemanship, we have a “partial license” to practice and upon completion of our housemanship period, we will then receive our “full license” which we can use to practice either in government or private sectors. As of now, I have neither.
Hence, the number one goal in terms of my career is to complete my housemanship period, hopefully without any extension. I know that it will be a difficult period for these next two years but I’m rather optimistic about it. I have a good feeling that everything will be alright.
After I have completed my housemanship period, what’s next? Well, I have to serve as a medical officer in the government for another year before I can fully resign, should I decide to enter the private sector. As of now, I have no such plan.
Do I want to specialise? Yes.
Being the first medical doctor in my family, I have no guidance. My family’s background consisted of engineers from my dad’s side and teachers and nurses from my mother’s side. Granted, nurses are within the medical profession as well, however, in terms of career progression, they are unable to guide me. Personally, I do not know how to proceed or which examination to seat for or to prepare for.
I should do my research I know.
However, I have decided to go with the flow. Receive my placement in housemanship first and see which particular department interests me and proceed from there. I do not know if that is a smart choice or a foolish one.
There is one thing I am certain of which is I intend to specialise. I dislike surgery and I don’t think that I am fit to be one either due to my benign essential tremors that only worsens with stress and my knowledge in anatomy is rather poor. However, I do love to teach and I love to talk to people. Hence, I might find myself being in medical rather than surgical.
At the time of writing this, I am rather aimless when it comes to my career plans. Hopefully in the months to come, I may write another post with a different answer.
