What is your definition of “Teacher”?

For me, a teacher is one who teaches.

Well, isn’t that stating the obvious?

A teacher is one who teaches, mentors and guides an individual or a group on a particular subject or topic or profession.

This is for the betterment of the group or individual learning as well as the teacher as they’ll only grow to master what they are teaching.

I came from a family of teachers on my mother’s side, most of them retiring as headmasters or headmistresses. Besides that, my dear best friend, Sarah, is a teacher herself as well as my dearest mentor whom I call “Mother”, Dr. Aida Rezaei. I find myself building bonds and connections with my teachers or lecturers back while I was still studying.

Maybe it was the “teaching” in my blood or perhaps, I was in search for constant guidance from people around me that drew me to them or them to me.

I don’t quite know the answer to that. Nevertheless, here are 3 Reasons Why I Have The Most Respect For Teachers.

1. Teachers CREATE & EDUCATE The People Of Today

We would not know something unless we were told or we have learnt about it, either through school or through reading up about it. True, experiences does contribute majorly in our knowledge of something. However, most often even during our experiences, we were taught in some way by somebody even if it may be of a minuscule amount.

Think about it. The people of today. We were educated, with our parents or guardians being our first teachers, before moving onto primary (elementary), secondary (high school) and onto universities or professional certified courses.

We were all taught. No doubt, some subjects that we have learnt may not be of any use in our lives today, again this depends on what you’re doing or working as, we were never left to fully figure out on our own as even the people behind the ones who created videos on YouTube or books serve to educate us. Yes, we were left to our own device most of the time to figure out something but at least we were left with what little guidance we had. I think I see the glass a half full most of the time.

Personally, I feel that we would not get to where we are today if not for teachers.

2. Teaching Is A LIFELONG Duty

Have you ever come across teachers or somebody who is just so deep and passionate into what they’re doing that you understand so well and eventually fell in love with that subject?

I’ve come across those teachers. I’m sure you have too.

These are the teachers who are willing to go the extra mile if you were to approach them personally. They are extremely dedicated and will constantly guide and even push you because they hope the ultimate best for you.

It is as if teaching is in their bloodstream, for they live and breath it and take ultimate joy out of it.

Most of the teachers who have taught me in high school and university have retired along the years, most of them retired after accepting their extension of 2-4 years after 56 years of age. Some of them are still teaching in tuitions and some of them, if you were to talk to them, it is as if they have never left teaching.

Teaching is not a job for some. It is a lifetime duty for which they would gladly lay down their life for and sacrifice their time.

The duty as a teacher is not confined to office hours, it extends beyond the regular hours, beyond the four walls of the classroom, beyond the school compound and also, beyond the retirement age as we are learning everyday, all the time.

3. Many Of Us Are Teachers – Mentors

An Engineer, a Doctor, an Accountant, regardless.

As we progress throughout our careers, we will move up the hierarchy in our profession indefinitely. This comes with added responsibilities in addition to the benefits, as with great power, comes great responsibility. Hence, we are required to mentor those in our team or our juniors until they are fit enough to go about on their own.

Though I am a Doctor, having graduated medical school, I consider myself a lifelong teacher as I fell in love with teaching while helping out my dear friends in The Impostors. Hence, teaching is something I will never let go off and one I am truly passionate about.

To all the Teachers out there, thank you very much for doing an amazing job!

  1. Now after reading this I miss school days

Eventhough there are times where teachers can be scary and strict, it actually stays longer in our mind 🙂

Wonder what it will be if we don’t have teacher in this world🥲
