Balancing work and home life. Article written by Dr. Jewel Nambiar, The Theoretical Doctor.

I wouldn’t consider myself working at the moment although I do run this blog, my YouTube channel and my Podcast because firstly, I do not earn from it. Secondly, it is purely out of my own desire to teach and contribute in my own way back to society. Thirdly, I absolutely enjoy it and I do not have a fix time for it and well, I do it everyday, even on holidays.

However, back in medical school, I had a lot on my plate, not forgetting the random assignments and weekly presentations we had to complete. In addition to that, we always had some form of assessments or exams around the corner.

Albeit that, I find that I managed to somehow strike a balance between my school life and home life.

Firstly, whenever my parents do come up for a visit, they used to visit me often, almost every week, I would throw all “outing plans” out the window. My time with my parents are on top of my list of priorities even if they may just be chilling indoors. Then, I would schedule my other plans around them.

Next, I usually vacuum in the evenings followed by laundry every 3-4 days and leaving the weekly mopping and toilet cleaning towards the end of the week. This is usually done in the late afternoons or evenings because I usually have my classes in the mornings or afternoons or that would be the time I decide to revise or complete any impending tasks relating to my school life. Evening is also the best time for me because I would go to sleep with ease knowing that I would wake up to a clean home the following day and not worry about any impromptu visitations from friends.

In terms of outings with friends, I rarely go out unless it’s nearby, a weekly Sunday service with a friend or with certain specific people.

Thus, I feel that I was able to strike a balance. I did not cut my friends out completely, in fact, I prioritised my communication with my closed circle of friends. On top of that, I also prioritised my time with my parents while focusing on my studies.

It was a good work and home life balance.
