Sacrifices.

We encounter them daily in our lives, some in small ways while some in, well, not so small ways, be it emotionally, time or financially.

There are just one too many sacrifices to talk about in answer to this prompt. Hence, I will just highlight one which is the words I speak.

A friend told me a few days back that when I was in high school, the main reason why my peers dislike me was that I was too direct and that my words cut like a knife. I find it rather ironic as in university, people would encourage me to speak my mind and to be more direct.

Personally, when communicating with people, I prefer them to be direct and to cut to the chase but that’s not how everybody is. Some of us are actually affected by mannerisms, etiquettes, tone, demeanour and body language. After all, we are all human and each of us are created uniquely.

As I grow older, I started to value my relationship with people, not in terms of what they think of me. A lot of my friends misconstrue my actions as being a “people-pleaser” but that is simply not it. I have moved past the phase of overthinking how others would think of me. Rather, I am more interested in maintaining the peace.

The sacrifice I find myself making more as I grow older is speaking my mind. Well, I used to think of it as a form of sacrifice as I tend to be quiet and listen more in return. However, now I think of it more as me minding my words as I’d like to think that words are powerful and hence, we should be more mindful of what we speak.

Previously, the approach I took was more of an “Alright, I’ll let you win this time but one day, you’ll face the consequences and see that I’m right”. However now, I merely stand firm on my personal opinions and would not let the opinion of others affect me although I do listen to them. Everybody has their own opinions respectively and not everybody needs to know mine, maybe it is for their own peace, an outlet.

Thus, words… The words I speak… My mind.. My thoughts… That is a form of sacrifice I am willing to make in order to maintain the peace.
