My top 5 favourite fruits as a malaysian. Article written by Dr. Jewel Nambiar, The Theoretical Doctor.

Fruits? Well, that’s easy.

First of all, I’m Malaysian and we LOVE the King of Fruits, Durian! (Well, at least most of us do).

1. Durian

Durian is a seasonal fruit, depending on the region, it comes during different months of the year. There are various types of durians in terms of colour, taste and texture. Personally, despite being exposed to the various types, I have categorised durians into “yellow” or “milky” categories. Both are equally delicious in their own way. However, as a personal preference, I like the “milky” one more.

2. Rambutan

Rambutan not Pulasan. They’re both two different fruits despite appearing similar.

Rambutan is a seasonal fruit as well and usually appears concurrent with the durian season. Growing up, I used to categorise Rambutan into two categories based on their skin colour, “Yellow” and “Red”.

The red-skin rambutan is more common and found generally everywhere. The yellow-skin rambutan is less common but I find it sweeter.

3. Mango

By mango, I meant the “Indian mango”, I do not know if there is such a name but growing up, that’s what my mom usually calls it.

In terms of mango, I love the sour ones. For me the “sweet mangoes” are unfortunately, “too sweet” for my taste buds.

4. Coconut

I love the water, not the flesh.

Thus, I would usually finish the drink and leave the flesh for my parents.

5. Pineapple

I absolutely love pineapples!

I recalled having this pineapple plant at the back of my house growing up and I remembered being extremely excited wherever there is a new fruit.

In terms of pineapple, I like them when they are sweet. A trick my mother would do is to “rub” the pineapple with salt after removing the skin and rinse it all off after a good 1-2 minutes.

Here are my top 5 personal favourite fruits. Albeit being surrounded by tons of tropical fruits, I rarely eat them. Personally, I’m not much of a fruit person.
