YouTube.

It is a website, more so a search engine featuring videos and shorts (nowadays) or also series or movies (if you’re lucky).

When I started my very first YouTube Channel, Jewel Nambiar, I mainly posted videos of me teaching STPM Biology (which have been hidden now) as well as vlogs. Now, I have another channel, The Theoretical Doctor where I mainly post teaching videos curated for STPM Biology and Final Year Medical Students through my crash course MBBS FlashDash.

Back then, I used to admire the ability of people to upload such videos on a regular basis (I still do admire them) and not only that, but with good editing as well.

I certainly did not know the first thing when it comes to editing videos. It seems really complicated. It’s magic. That was until I decided to watch some simple editing videos, of course and realised that I’m actually able to do that through my own laptop or phone.

Thus, as you can see in my channel, The Theoretical Doctor, the videos require minimal editing as I’m mainly teaching. Even in my other channel, Jewel Nambiar, I used very minimal editing for my vlogs.

Hence, if you’re a newbie and want to know which applications to use for beginners and simple editing, here are 5 Apps that I use for editing my videos on my Channel as well as building my YouTube Channel.

iMovie App

1. iMovie

I definitely need to edit my videos somewhere. Back in high school, before I was given my very first laptop, I used to use Windows MovieMaker to edit my videos.

It was relatively easy to use and I could choose which transitions or add background music.

iMovie on Apple devices works similarly. I usually film my videos through my phone if I’m vlogging or record through a Zoom meeting if I’m teaching.

First, I would upload the unedited videos to iMovie and depending on my draft of the video, I would edit it accordingly, such as adding transitions, music in the background, zoom at certain parts or adding a divider in between.

It’s extremely user friendly and perfect for beginners as it allows you to do your work without much of the other options that are available in other applications which is perfect if you are skilled in video editing but not for me. Too many choices just complicates things and I’m extremely indecisive.

In addition to that, iMovie is also FREE on Apple devices. Hence, you do not need to invest in extra years it equipments. You could directly edit your videos from your iPhone or iPad or your MacBook if you have them.

Wordpress App

2. WordPress

This is where I build my website.

No, it’s not necessary to have a website. Many YouTubers do not have one or they usually create one much later.

However, since my channel, The Theoretical Doctor, is mainly a teaching channel, I wanted a place for me to share my notes and uploading a Google Drive Link into my description of every video does not seem doable in the long run and it just does not seem professional.

If you’re into website building, you can consider other platforms.

However, I needed something simple and easy to manage. Thus, I considered WordPress. It’s relatively easy to use as you can see on my website with multiple templates to choose from.

Granted, there are more free features which I can utilise to make my website more aesthetically pleasing but I’ve yet to learn.

Canva App

3. Canva

I use Canva A LOT, for many years.

Canva is a free editing platform with multiple free designs to choose from or you could even design from scratch.

I’ve edited thumbnails, pictures, short videos, my notes on my channel and basically every graphic you see on my website and channel while using the free feature on Canva.

Thus, investing in other platforms for photo editing can be put off, especially if you need a while to learn how to utilise it.

Pinterest App

4. Pinterest

This is where I share my graphics or notes to my blog posts or videos.

Pinterest serves as a search engine as well and as a student, I used to spend a lot of time on Pinterest, searching for simple mind maps or short notes.

Besides that, Pinterest serves as a platform to advertise your content.

Zoom App

5. Zoom

Yes, I use Zoom.

That’s because of the recording feature available even on the free feature.

Previously, I used to screen record and record my voice separately and basically gauge which part I’m at at and edit my videos.

It was extremely tedious for me.

Ever since the COVID-19 Pandemic and Zoom became really famous and introduced a recording feature, teaching virtually became easier.

As I film my videos, I would record them and record my voice separately on my phone as the quality is better.

From there, I will upload them in iMovie and adjust to the frequency of the audio. This saves me so much hassle in gauging the parts I’m at as I edit the videos.

After that, I will mute the audio from the video recording used on Zoom and edit.

These are the applications I used to build my YouTube channel with no expenditure involved as well as minimal work.

If you’re new into the world of video editing and would like to dip your toes in content creation, I hope these apps help!
