Medical school is a relatively long, tiring yet fun journey, rich with fulfilling experiences and lessons that ends right as you started entering the momentum.

5 years of medical school went by relatively fast for me, there were always back-to-back exams, stuffs to be completed, even went through online classes during the COVID-19 Pandemic and hospital restrictions for bedside teachings are just among the few experiences I’ve had in my medical school journey.

If I could travel back to my first year and start all over again, apart from prioritising my studies, work and certain people, one thing for certain is that I would definitely vlog more.

I do have a YouTube channel, Jewel Nambiar where I posted vlogs and it was something I extremely enjoyed doing.

It forced me out of my comfort zone and may seem really daunting but thankfully, the response were good. By good, I meant, no negative or toxicity or bullying involved in what I loves to do.

Sadly, I did not prioritise it. Hence, it’s been a long while since I’ve posted a video there.

Thus, if you are in medical school and contemplating if you should vlog or start a YouTube channel, these are just a few reasons to hopefully convince or encourage you to start one.

1. You Will Be Able To Guide Future Juniors

First of all, it introduces your university and people are constantly looking on Google or YouTube to watch a sneak peak of what your medical journey is like over there.

It’s not that you’re trying to promote the institution through free marketing (although indirectly you are), but in my experience, some of my juniors who eventually became my friends did seek out for unbiased opinions and experiences and I was able to guide them in their decision in pursuing medicine in their chosen institution.

While I was researching on the university I graduated from, MAHSA University, I was unable to find proper sources or students who were actually studying there to guide me.

Forget guiding. I did not even know how the campus looks like.

The only ones willing to talk to me were marketing advisors and we all know that they are the ones to be avoided when you want real and raw experiences or opinions.

Thus, you would be doing others a great service on both the positive and negative aspects of your particular institution and guide others.

2. Document Your Medical Journey

You will only experience medical school once in your lifetime. Well, for most of us. After that, we will progress into other courses or different specialties.

Of course, we can document it through photos or videos on our devices or by posting them on social media, however, by posting vlogs, you will be able to share your journey with your family members and others as well.

Looking back, there were many memories I wish I documented more, rewatching it again allows me to relieve the experience all over again.

3. Side Hustle

We know that you will be able to monetise your videos on YouTube with Google AdSense.

Although being in medical school means that medicine or studying should be your top most priority, having a side hustle is definitely an advantage. Though you may not consider making a career out of it, it’s good to have some form of financial liberation.

These are just my 3 reasons why you should consider starting a YouTube channel in medical school and hopefully this encourages you to begin one.
