When people offer me bananas, I usually reject them followed by saying that I’m allergic to it.
Am I actually allergic to it? By allergies, do I develop the typical symptoms of anaphylaxis? Nope. More like I am intolerant towards it actually.
I used to enjoy bananas once upon a time. However, my liking towards it all went out the window one fine afternoon, about 11 years ago when I was 15 years old.
I had just shifted into a new home with my parents at that time and I was more than keen to experiment with the new oven. It was our very first and only oven and I have always had an interest in baking and cooking.
Thus, I started experimenting with various recipes. It became an enjoyable thing that I looked forward to after coming back from school. Some of it did turn out really well while some of it did not.
One day, I attempted to bake banana cake. My parents is fond of banana cakes and I shared a liking towards it as well. The first time I attempted to bake it, it turned out really good.
However, in my attempts to make the banana cakes “tastier”, I decided to increase the amount of mashed bananas. I used to bring my baked goods to tuition classes back then and that happened to be my last class for the year before the major exam commenced.
Henceforth, I went about my plan to bake 3 trays of banana cakes with “extra bananas”. I recalled putting the trays in the oven after adding the batter only to find that the centre is still goey and wet 30 minutes later.
Perhaps, I need another 10 minutes?
Thus, I baked it for another 3 more cycles of 10 minutes.
After that, I decided to take it out of the oven. Usually, we would let it sit and cool before trying it but me being incredibly impatient, decided against waiting.
Hence, I flipped the cake, cut it in the middle and out flowed the mashed bananas like a lava cake. Despite my gut cautioning me against trying it, I decided to give myself a spoonful of it and as you can imagine, it was bad. I recalled it being extremely terrible for me and the smell of the banana was simply too strong. The other 2 trays were no different either.
I vomited the contents, developed fever that night and the following day.
Following that event, I feel nauseated whenever I smell bananas, even if it is the real fruit itself.
Till today, I still do not eat bananas even though I am somewhat able to tolerate the smell now.
