Dear 14-year-old me,
You have just completed the first year of high school and I bet that it wasn’t easy. It probably felt like the longest year ever. You were trying to adjust to the system and on top of that, trying to stay ahead with your studies. Not forgetting that personal matters do get in the way. Everyday, you do feel like giving up, I truly understand that.
I’m still adjusting myself. I’ve just started my internship and still trying to adjust to the system. I’m also trying to stay ahead of my knowledge in medicine. I have such poor memory. It has always been my vice.
This is me being in a similar position as you are then but under different circumstances.
My dear, things will not get better, they only grow harder and honestly, there is nothing you can do about it. However, you are in control of how you perceive and react to the situation and circumstances.
Never ever compare what you’re going through with what others are going through. Everybody has their own personal struggles and issues to deal with. But remember my dear, tough times do not last, there is a season for everything. As I mentioned before, things do not become easier. It is simply how you perceive the situation and how you react towards it.
Thus, in the midst of all of these, hold your head up high and smile. Amidst the cry, amidst the frustrations, amidst the anxiety, smile.
Smile. Pray. Show up everyday.
Before you know it, you’ll look back and realised on how far you’ve come despite not feeling any difference.
High school will not be so enjoyable for you due to the malignant and toxic environment. However, you will make friends along the way. Friends who will remain in your life until today. Shower them with love, care and compassion and hold on to them dearly for these are your family. It doesn’t matter if you grew up feeling lonely and having a large group of superficial friends is not worth it either.
Eventually, along the way, you will cross paths with various people who will each contribute some form of lesson into your life. Then, my dear, you will learn and grow.
Have faith my dear and stay strong.
Control your temper, be patient and always treat people with kindness and love despite being treated unfairly or unjustly because that is your strength, never a weakness. That is what makes you unique. Study hard but remember to have fun.
Life is not all about studies and work. Just make the best out of your year.
You are amazing regardless of what people say.
From a 26-year-old Dr. Jewel Nambiar
