What’s the best piece of advice you’ve ever received?

All throughout my short almost 26 years of life, I’ve been given advices and guided by amazing mentors and people. Most of which are good that I can’t quite pick one as the best piece.
However, if there is one piece of advice that remained in my mind and kept me on this internship journey is this :
“Tap yourself on your shoulder for showing up everyday because even that in itself is hard. One year from now, when you look back, you’ll realise how far you’ve come and how much you’ve grown.”
This was told by a senior, Dr. Tan Wei Shan, while I was still tagging in my first posting, Orthopaedics.
Tagging, if not the most, is one of the hardest part early in a posting. Our hours are long and it is a 2 weeks process, from 7am-10pm on paper but in reality, we arrive much earlier and return much later.
It was a mentally challenging time for me as well and I was on the verge of breaking down and quitting, just like everyone else. It did not help that I was near the end of my tagging period yet I did not have an idea as to properly review a patient in the morning.
Yet whenever I feel like throwing in the towel and calling it quits as my work just do not make sense, I will remember these words.
Hence, that is what I am doing now, taking a day at a time, going through it, putting my best foot forward and just showing up every day.
