My favourite form of physical exercise? Well, that’s really simple. It is walking.

I’ve mentioned this in a few of my previous articles that I enjoy walking. Prior to starting my internship / housemanship, I used to monitor my steps, ensuring that I adhere to at least a minimum of 10,000 steps per day and on some days, at least around 10km per day.

I recalled walking during the mornings before classes, during the evenings and also while I was revising. I made it a habit to move around a lot, just so I could gain those steps. It wasn’t long before it became a habit and I simply could not stay idle.

However, adhering to 10,000 steps by the end of the day seemed a tad difficult still. On most days, my average steps were around 10,000 steps, just merely reaching my target for the day.

Ever since I’ve begun my housemanship journey, I started walking A LOT. The journey from my place of residence to the hospital itself earns me 3,000 steps and I’ve yet to even begun my work for the day.

The hospital that I work in is the only tertiary hospital for the whole state and is a rather huge one. Thus, it is a journey from one place to another even for simple things such as sending bloods which we will go for multiple times in a day. Thus, my average daily steps ranges around 16k – 18k steps and more than 20k steps during my tagging period as the tagging hours are long.

It wasn’t long before all those cumulative steps and calories burnt throughout the day started manifesting physically and I started losing weight and the weight drops off easily. I still ate throughout the day, mainly breakfast and dinner. Lunch is a rare occasion unless on weekends as I would be preoccupied in settling my job-lists for the day.

The best part of it is? I get paid as well, NOT for losing weight of course. This part is merely a fringe benefit of what I do on a daily basis.

My aim is not to lose weight of course. Rather, my mind is focused on completing the tasks for the day, eating healthy foods (I mean I try to), to ensure that I am able to sustain throughout the day.
