Something I Remind Myself Constantly, Especially On Bad Days As A Junior Doctor. Article written by Dr. Jewel Nambiar

“There is always an end to everything.”

That depends on your interpretation of that sentence.

Personally, I view it from a positive or “hopeful” aspect that gets me through my day on a daily basis, especially on bad days.

I think it’s something simple that I’ve somewhat forgotten after commencing my internship. I was so lost in work that I forgot that although being in the medical field, it requires us to be selfless and compassionate on top of prioritising the patients’ healthcare and best interest, I forgot that despite all of that, at the end of the day, “work is work”.

Perhaps, I have also forgotten that as I am living far away from my parents, completely on a different island, which is the beautiful Land of Hornbills, Sarawak which also happens to be my first and only choice for my housemanship training.

I have gotten used to living semi-independently from my parents for a few years that the moment I grew “bored”, I immediately return to work again.

Now, that is also bad because when things are bad as life is simply a rollercoaster ride of highs and lows, I tend to burnout faster and that definitely dampens my spirit and demotivates me.

Thus, while pushing towards the end of my third month in my first posting, Orthopaedics, I learnt that there is always an end to every day and every shift. That the day was merely a bad one and not a bad life. Accept the fact that for today, “I may be defeated but I did not lose the battle.”

Hence, I collect myself and try again the following day.

Thus, I see myself advising this particular sentence to my juniors especially when I see the fear and anxiety displayed in their eyes and I simply can’t help but feel for them as I personally have been in their position numerous times. For some people like me, adapting to housemanship took a while and battered me mentally which subsequently affected my physical health as well.

Hence, my beloved readers, I may not know what you are going through nor am I comparing my issues to yours. Everybody has their own set of challenges which are different. However, it all affects us in such a deep way that can sometimes blind us from viewing the path of coming out of it. Sometimes, we are too deep and drowning in our own set of issues.

If you have just begun housemanship or is currently in the midst of it, I hope that you do see the light and reason for going through this journey. The job does not get easier and the responsibility only builds overtime. However, finally realising your purpose amidst this battle and hardship does alleviate some of the unseen stress.

“Being AWARE Is HALF The Battle!”

As I mentioned, do remember that when you are having a bad day, there is always an end to it. Stay strong and always have faith.
