My Daily Morning Routine As A House Officer In The Orthopaedics Posting - Housemanship Diaries. Article written by Dr Jewel Nambiar

I never thought that I would be writing such article for my Orthopaedic posting. Perhaps it is because I joined the Orthopaedics posting as my first posting. Thus, initially it felt very chaotic for me and I was struggling to see the light or how it does actually get better with time as mentioned by my seniors.

However, it actually did get better and surprisingly, I started enjoying the hands on procedures, provided that I’m not allocated in wards during the day shift of course which is less stressful but I disliked every bit of it. Personally, wards at night is not as bad, better than day time actually.

Back to the purpose of this article, with time, as I started cooking again. Unknowingly, I started developing a daily routine before going to work.

1. Wake Up At 4am

I do not know why I even do that.

Personally, I am an early riser and once I get up, it’s hard for me to sleep again. Hence, even on days that I am working at night, I still rise at 4am.

2. My Morning Coffee / Morning Tea & Breakfast

I am addicted to toast. Perhaps I’m just used to having toasts in the morning at home with addition to rice and other foods.

Hence, it brought a sense of comfort in the morning before I begin my day. If I am working that morning, I would brew my morning coffee and prepare toast for breakfast and pack my cold coffee and tea into two separate flasks which I have prepped the night before.

However, if I were working at night or if it is my day off, I would usually start my morning “chai” or in other words, “milk tea”. Thus, I’ll be away at the stove, making tea from scratch with cardamom, ginger and cinnamon infusion.

Just some spices to spice up my morning.

3. Writing / Studying

On most days, I write. I usually limit myself to an article per morning as I have a tendency of getting carried away while writing.

However, if I’m working at night or having an off day, I would usually allocate the following few hours till noon towards some reading or studying.

I’m still struggling to manage my time efficiently, it’s sadly one of my vice. Thus, I try to slot in studying as best as I can during my free period.

4. Get Ready For Work

Of course, how can I miss my morning shower?

5. Off To Work!

This varies. If I’m allocated at ward, I would leave by 5:30am or latest by 6am. However, if I’m EMOT AM or ETD AM, I would usually leave by 6:50am.

Unless of course I work at night, then I’ll usually sleep by noon and leave at latest by 6:50pm.
