“When you were five, what did you want to be when you grew up?”
To de a doctor. Well, I did it. I’m a doctor today. A very junior one nevertheless but still.
Why?
I do not have an answer to that. When I was 5 years old, the thought of serving the community was the last thing on my mind. I wanted to be a doctor, just because. No particular reason.
Perhaps it was instilled into me by the people surrounding me. I found myself “playing doctor”, auscultating my dolls with the toy stethoscope, administering injections to them and pretending to conduct surgeries.
Overtime, I realised my dream was to be a teacher. Sadly, it was something I realised only in my fourth year of university.
I find joy and passion in serving back to the community through teaching. It does not really sadden me as much as I know that I will still be able to pursue that pathway.
Somehow, someday I know that I will be, be it in terms of guiding my juniors or teaching a particular topic among my group of friends or as a clinical lecturer in the future.
However, in terms of my dream when I was 5 years old, it is something that I have thankfully achieved.
