First of all, Blessed Happy New Year!
While growing up, my father always made it a point to go to work ever since he started working at the age of 18.
Somehow, it has become a tradition for him. His belief is that if he were to be working on New Year’s Day, he would be able to work throughout the year. Of course it’s just a personal ritual. However, one that I have somewhat inculcated into my working life.
Thus, I did not apply for leave and went to work on New Year’s Day.
My first day of 2024 started with me going to work by 5:30 a.m. Usually during the weekends and holidays in this particular department that I am in, the medical officers and specialists tend to arrive early. Thus, we as house officers are required to go in even earlier. Sadly, we are not allowed to leave the moment we are done with our work as our medical officers and specialists.
The day became even better as I worked with extremely nice bosses in the morning and with another great house officer.
Together, we worked as a team, helping to complete each other’s joblists which were mainly doing perineal checks for the post spontaneous vertex delivery patients and mind you, there were a ton since we discharged almost the whole ward that day.
Thankfully, it was all completed by 11 a.m and we managed to order lunch and have our so called “New Year Feast”. It so happened that I was being allocated as “short day” on that particular day. Hence, I went back at 5pm.
Going back at 5pm is a privilege, since on most days, we return home at 7pm or more and in this part of Malaysia, the sun would’ve usually set by then.
Upon returning home, I took the opportunity to enjoy the sunset at the rooftop, imagining that I’m with my family. I miss my family on most days that I question myself on why did I voluntarily sent myself to this part of the country where the manpower is even less and the patient load is more.
However, it is all part of serving back to community. All in all, working on New Year’s Day was good indeed.
