My batch in the O&G Department were not so fortunate as we were rather “anaemic” in house officers towards the end of our time serving in this posting.
2 weeks prior to our batch leaving. A huge batch of seniors had just left. Thus, ON was left with only 4 house officers, 1 house officer to cover PAC and Labour Ward, 1 house officer to cover Maternity 2, 1 house officer to cover the Gynaecology Ward and the Operating Theatre, OT. If someone unfortunately falls sick and decides to go on medical leave, it is even lesser.
During this period, I was stationed for ON in Gynae Ward. So far, upon my arrival to the ward, I barely have time to start oncall reviews before I am called to attend a case in the operating theatre.
It was good as I did love the OT but also bad because I had to keep travelling back and forth to the ward.
In the morning, I would be “cc-ed” for help on discharges, certain referrals and blood.
On my last night in O&G, I was stationed at Maternity 2 and post night, I had to follow the morning rounds as well as to help carry out the active joblists since in the morning, there is also only 1 house officer taking care of the ward.
Just because of the lack of manpower, those who were leaving had their leaves cut short. Initially, I had a total of 5 days of leave but it was reduced to 3 days. Thus, I did not return home during that time.
I did not mind as long as I had some form of leave prior to starting my next posting.
Although, working during the anaemic house officer period was extremely tiring, it made me realise that we were still able to get things done even if there were lack of manpower as we worked as a team with the medical officers and specialists.
