The Benefits Of Working During The Weekend / Weekdays As A House Officer | Housemanship Diaries

The day of the week that I despise working the most would be on Mondays. I think that goes the same for many.

I dislike it because it is the busiest day of the week and somehow people’s mood tend to be shorter than usual.

Being a house officer, we work 6 days a week with 1 allocated day off for the week. Sometimes we are given the night shift and the following day is our “post night”. “Post night” is a protected time off whereby upon returning home in the morning till the following morning, we are considered “off”.

During the weekdays, the rounds usually consists of morning and afternoon rounds. AM and PM reviews. It is not just reviews but also completing the active joblists in between, completing the discharges of any patients, requesting for scans if needed, acquiring an outpatient appointment, taking blood, preparing the coming morning bloods, referrals if needed, all these before the afternoon reviews.

Thus, it can get rather busy and hectic at times. However, the good thing about working on weekdays is that there is a lot of manpower. Should there be any issues, the medical officers and specialists are always around, during office hours of course.

On the other hand, during the weekends or public holidays, the manpower is severely limited and usually the oncall team or postcall team would be in charge of handling the morning rounds. The good thing though is that rounds would only be in the morning. Only AM rounds and no PM rounds.

Besides that, since the radiology department and clinics are closed, the odds of requesting a radiological appointment or outpatient clinic date is almost non-existent. In terms of radiological scans, only if it is urgent, to which then you would have to present to the medical officer on call in the radiology department.

Hence, during weekends, things usually slow down and most of the time, there is time for lunch or snacks in between and the best part, leaving work on time.

Depending in the posting that you are in, you would be able to “claim public holiday replacements”. Thus, if we happened to be working during a public holiday, we can save it for use later and apply for a day off.

Talk about added benefits while working on a slow day.

Hence, working during the weekends is good as things usually slow down and if you need to slow down without taking a full break, working during weekends or public holidays as a house officer is the way to go.

Initially, my schedule used to be set in such that I would be “post night” on Saturday followed by “off” on Sunday. This gives me the feel of a “weekend” which is good too as this grants me the privilege of going to church or to enjoy the weekend out.

Either way, there are benefits on both parts of working either during the weekdays or weekends.

As long as it is not a Monday of course.
