The Joy Of Working The Night Shift As A House Officer

The night shift during housemanship is always followed by post night. Post night is the protected time off after a night’s shift for us to rest and recuperate. Similar to an “off day”.

Working during the night shift can seem daunting as only the oncall team will be there and usually only one medical officer will be in charge of one ward. Thus, it may seem rather intimidating as should there be any issues, it may take some time before help arrives.

I’m always scared prior to starting my night shift. Although, I do know that things will go well and I do know of the person that I will be working with, I am nevertheless still somewhat anxious.

The nice part of working at night is that you do not have to get up super early in the morning during the wee hours. Instead, I usually allow myself to sleep in and naturally wake up. Somehow, my body feels more rested and I go about slowly for my morning, brewing chai and preparing breakfast while allowing myself the pleasure of writing.

I pretty much allow myself the privilege of enjoying my morning off before going back to sleep in the afternoon and getting up in the evenings.

From there onwards, the sinking feeling begins to kick in. I am somewhat anxious and worried prior to starting my shift. After the night rounds, I feel a little better but my mood picks up around 4am as daylight is imminent and although I am still far from ending my shift, the morning team is due to arrive.

Usually in the morning, I would help out by following rounds if I have completed all my tasks, it depends. Some days, I do follow and some days, I do not. In the morning, things will start to slow down for me and finally, return home.

During our “post night” shift, we try our best to return on time if possible or as early as possible. The rest of our day will be off, not a full day but at least an off which will be spent by us recuperating and resting.

Sometimes, the post night shift is followed by an “off day”. This gives the “feel” of a weekend before finally returning to work again.

Although I work longer during the night shift, somehow I prefer it over working the day shift. Perhaps, it is the ability to allow myself to arouse naturally, thus giving me the optimum hours of rest that my body needs before I’m off to work again.
