Prior to starting my housemanship journey, I was fearful. I still am today. However, I also had the mindset that I was determined to make the journey as enjoyable as I possibly can.
I knew that it was going to be hard. Part of me was also worried that I would break, give up halfway and not pull through this tough journey.
I wanted to make as much memories as I can as well as to learn as much as I possibly can.
When I began housemanship, I did lose sight of that thought along the way and being far away from home did not make it easier as well.
It wasn’t till I was around 2 months into my journey did I finally began to learn to appreciate the hardships that come with learning.
It was the “growing pain”.
It was even worse when I kept focusing on the outcome of the situation or my journey rather than enjoying the process and letting the future handle itself.
It wasn’t until yesterday when I was listening to a podcast which advised me to enjoy the journey, put my best foot forward everyday and to let the result take care of themselves.
That definitely resonated with me.
Back in university, I used to advise myself that irregardless of tough times, the most important part is that I tried my very best and that would determine my future. I was going to try my best to keep myself well-equipped.
Did that mean that I am a better doctor today because of that?
Probably not.
Practicing as a medical doctor is a whole new level as compared to being in medical school and everyday, I am learning on the job.
That is the fun part actually. To view each day as the start of a new game or a new level and to just try your best every single day.
For some days, it does turn out good while on some days, it is indeed bad and hectic. However, a couple of bad days does not necessarily translate into a bad life.
An advise to all of us and also, mainly to myself is, to learn to go with the flow and to let the results handle themselves. Learn to reset and try again.
Housemanship is indeed a tough journey but amidst the hardship, let’s enjoy it to the best that we can which not only serves towards making us better clinicians but also something for us to look back on in the years to come.
It does get better overtime.
