Was today typical?
It’s ironic that this prompt appeared on a Monday of all days.
Maybe that’s the whole point.
In one of my previous post, I wrote about how it has been some time since I’ve returned to work on a Monday.
However, albeit it being a busy day, I was looking forward towards Monday.
I arrived at work around 5:30am. Supposedly in charged of the patients in the acute bay area as well as the side rooms.
The patients located in the acute bay are patients who needs close monitoring. Thus, they are situated in front of the nursing counter and are usually the first to be reviewed by doctors.
The “side rooms” are situated at the back of the ward and consists of mostly stable patients who are awaiting operation or are post-operative.
The acute bay was filled with 4 patients while the side room only had 3. Thankfully, for the side room, I had a partner as well. Thus, I carried on doing my part for the acute beds.
“Three” is a sweet number but also a terrifying one as should there be any new admissions, there would be tons of spaces to be filled and sometimes it can get rather overwhelming during days where there are multiple or back-to-back admissions.
The day started off smoothly with a rather nice registrar to work with. The day then proceeded with a nice surgeon for rounds. We were done with all of our joblists way before noon and actually had time to take things slow. It felt like the weekend.
We completed our afternoon reviews early as we anticipated a rush of admissions during the afternoon or evening.
This afternoon grand rounds was the quickest I’ve ever experienced in this department.
After which, we proceeded with our afternoon joblists which weren’t much followed by oncall reviews for the evening before handing over to the night shift and returning home.
Days like this, especially on a Monday can seem surreal and too good to be true.
