A short blog regarding how cooking brings me peace at the end of a work shift during my Fourth Posting in my Housemanship Journey.

Article written by Dr Jewel Nambiar.

What brings you peace?

Well, the answer is definitely not going to work. I usually tend to feel anxious and nervous prior to the start of my shift. Usually it’s because I do not know of the patients that I’ll be taking care of as well as the people I’ll be working with, a.k.a “my bosses”.

Usually if I know of the people that I’ll be working with, I’ll feel a bit better and reassured but that does not alleviate my anxiety. It merely softens it.

Usually, at the end of the day, I would head back home and cook myself a good homecook meal. However, upon entering this fourth posting of my housemanship journey in Surgery, the environment is good but physically, it is tiring. Thus, I would usually meal prep in advance and bring a Tupperware to work to eat upon completion of my work for the day and prior to going back home.

The act of simply reheating back a home cooked meal on the pan or cooking a meal itself is satisfying.

Upon waking up, I would start my day with brewed coffee followed by dicing some sausages, mushrooms, tomatoes and onions. Next, I would saute them with minimal amount of oil and drizzle it with pepper and salt.

This is followed by cooking scrambled eggs.

Somehow, that calms me down for the day and upon returning home, by cooking again, it relieves the tiredness and sadness I’ve accumulated throughout the day.

Just merely offing my phone, putting a good movie or a good music or podcast and cooking away.

That brings me peace.
