My favourite memories in Paediatrics were in Paediatrics 2B. I fell in love with Paeds before I even off-tagged.
Perhaps it is due to the fact that I joined Paediatrics at the “right” time. Thus, whilst house officers are being rotated among the wards, so are the medical officers and specialists.
Since Day 1 of Paeds, I encountered many helpful and dedicated medical officers who went above and beyond to teaching us and being there for us, just in case we were to fall. It was a very kind and nurturing environment, one I felt extremely supported in.
During my second week in Paeds 2B, I met a person who not only turned out to be an amazing mentor but also a good friend.
I was mainly allocated to the respiratory cubicle and for the rest of the week I remained at that cubicle. My medical officer assigned to me at that time had just finished his housemanship and had just entered his journey as a medical officer.
He taught me how to review and what to focus on. Reviewing with him made me learn even faster and alleviated a lot of the stress I had. Soon, morning and afternoon reviews became fun and going to work was not as bad as it seems. Unknowingly, I gained my courage to present to the specialists.
Initially, taking care of the acute cubicle seemed daunting. However, as soon as I started my night shift, I realised that it is not as daunting as it seems. It is mainly about identifying which are the patients that required step up in terms of oxygen support.
Eventually, I was allocated to handle “Peri”. Being allocated as “peri” in Paeds 2B means that we are in charge of transferring in babies who are admitted for neonatal jaundice as well as to attend to any issues if a patient admitted under Paeds Surgical Ward is being seen by the Paediatrics Medical team as well.
There was an instance where I mistaken another medical officer for another and mistakenly wrote another medical officer’s name instead.
I spent around 2 months at that ward and soon the place did not seem daunting as I knew the medical officers and specialists that I would be working with.
On most days, I would leave to work by 6:30am to start my morning reviews and leave work by 6pm on the dot. At least, I try to.
Albeit the patient load is more compared to the Isolated Paediatrics 3A Ward, I enjoyed my time there very much.
Night shift is from 6pm to 10am the following day. As usual, I try to leave on time as well. Most of the time, I would be done by 8am and sometimes I would follow rounds or just chill till it’s 10am.
I’ve never forgotten how ecstatic I was, having worked in that ward for 2 months. Every time I were to reminisce my time over there, it is one always filled with good times and smiles which brings warmth to my heart.
If you are due to join General Paediatrics soon or just the Paediatrics Posting in general, I hope that you will enjoy your time here as much as I did.
