A short blog regarding the thing I deem most important to be carried around as a House Officer.

Article written by Dr. Jewel Nambiar.

What is the most important thing to carry with you all the time?

Working as a House Officer, I would personally say that there are many important items to carry with us.

Those who have worked with me or have seen me, knows that I’m always walking about with a large sling bag and it is always filled with stuffs.

Most of us do actually. Perhaps, I just like to be prepared. Thus, I’m always walking around with a large bag.

However, the most important thing I would say, if you were to ever bring yourself to work without your weapons , it would be your phone.

The most valuable asset.

As with many professions, we are extremely dependant on our mobile devices. It’s no difference over here in the hospital that I’m practicing in whereby we are extremely WhatsApp dependant.

There are many groups within the department itself which we use to communicate among each other such as for the ward, for the daily on-call team or inter-departments.

Being in the Surgical Department, we use it to send x-rays of the patients, reports of scans and also as our way of communicating with our superiors as well as our colleagues.

Personally if I am at work, my day would definitely go haywire without it. You would see us walking about with our phones even while sending bloods, not because we are scrolling mindlessly. I doubt we even have time for that anymore while at work.

As dangerous as it seems, most of us tend to be on our phones while walking just so we could multitask with other works at hand. However, that also led to my downfall in Surgery, which I will talk about in another article.

Thus, if there is anything you would consider investing prior to joining Housemanship, it would be a good phone with a large memory, one that doesn’t lag easily and has a good battery life as well as a good line plan.
