A random encounter with a stranger that stuck out positively to me. Article written by Dr. Jewel Nambiar, The Theoretical Doctor.

There are probably many , much of which I can’t recall off-hand at the moment but here’s one.

I was shopping for groceries a few days ago and as I was walking down this aisle of stationaries and notebooks, I paused to looked at the various type of notebooks arranged on the shelves. From small to large sizes and one liners to being completely blank.

For some reason, I love notebooks. Always had since small as it made me feel important like as if I was about to embark on an important journey that I have to pencil it down in a book.

Personally, I always carry around an A6 notebook with me wherever I go and a pencil because there is where I actually write my weekly long Sunday articles. Usually when it is an answer to a prompt like the Daily Dose which I post on weekdays, I would straight away type my articles online on WordPress.

Anyway, as I was glancing through the books, I recalled this brief short encounter with this lady back when I was around 6 or 7 years old. Back then, me and my parents were living in a different area and we used to go shopping at a nearby grocery store. After paying at the cashier, we would go to the customer service counter to check for any available free gifts. Usually, they would give cups or some random items but that’s what we would do. I remembered being rather short that I struggled to look over the counter, there was this tall and slim lady in shirt and jeans standing beside me.

I waited patiently for my turn and she received 4 notebooks as a free gift which were the size of a regular one liner notebook. However, the designs outside were rather interesting. I remembered it being dark blue with a few cartoons up front.

“I wanted one.”, I thought myself but kept quiet of course.

The lady then turned to leave but upon turning she saw me and gave me a kind smile. She had a kind face and she seemed around my mother’s age. Then, she proceeded to hand me a book. I looked at the book and then at her blankly before turning to my mom, unsure if I should accept this book since my mother has cautioned me numerous times on receiving gifts from strangers.

“Please take it, I have three children and they gave me four notebooks, so it’s an extra. These are free gifts from the cereals I bought earlier”, she said.

My mom nudged me to accept it and I did. She seemed harmless and smiled even more warmly. I thanked her and she waved before she walked away. I never saw her again after that.

I don’t remember her face clearly but I remembered the warmth and kindness she radiated and I thought to myself that one day, I would want to be that too. To radiate warm and kindness to someone else and to make their day a little brighter somehow.

From then on, I wanted to have a giving nature. Of course, with what is within my means and hope that I would be able to make a difference in someone else’s life.

Although it was just a notebook but to me, it was the loveliest gift someone could have ever given me. I remembered writing several made up short stories inside and eventually, the book fell apart and I think my mom recycled it.

Till today, every time I get a notebook, I am reminded of that brief special encounter.
