My favourite emojis and why. Article written by Dr. Jewel Nambiar, The Theoretical Doctor

Technology has become so heavily incorporated into our daily lives today that it is almost impossible to be without a phone.

Gone were the days where we would wait for a letter or an email at most from our long distance family member or friend. Almost everyone is literally a phone call away or a text message away at most.

Technology has made communication much easier. However, the downside of it is that since we are easily reachable, we are at risk of communication fatigue that sometimes we need a day or a week for ourselves to just be unreachable. In addition to that, communicating online removes the expression from our conversations, thus making our approach seem rather cold, especially to a stranger. Hence, the incorporation of emojis.

Personally, I am the regular “🙂” or “😀”. I don’t really like to use the smileys or emojis available on the phone and even if I do, it’s usually among my family members and close friends.

Here are my 5 most commonly used emojis in my daily conversations.

I use this during greetings or when I’m wishing someone well.

It just seems right to add it at the end, somewhat like a blessing in disguise? I don’t quite know how to explain this.

🌸

If I’m talking to a female and I don’t quite know them but I want to come across soft, I add this after their name. For example, “Hello Sarah 🌸 followed by my purpose of the conversation.

💖

I usually reserve this for my close friends who are females or if I’m known to be close with them at one point and we have not communicated for a long time.

Similarly, I add this after their name. For example, “Hi Evina 💖 followed by my purpose of the conversation.

😶

This is to express my interest or curiosity especially if I want to avoid coming across as angry, rude or cold over text.

For example, “But why? I thought you didn’t want to 😶

😕

Finally, I use this when I want to show some empathy via text. For example, “Yes I understand. Besides, you’ve been working extra long shifts and you must be tired 😕
