Involving myself in the community. Article written by Dr. Jewel Nambiar, The Theoretical Doctor.

I teach.

When I first entered medical school, I have always wanted to have a teaching channel. During my waiting period after graduating high school before entering university, I worked as a teacher. One thing for certain is that I take delight in being able to serve as a teacher and I love studying. That does not mean that I was a bright or excellent student.

Personally, I was curious about various topics and anything that I could get my hands on. I love to read and to acquire as much knowledge as I could. The pool of knowledge is just extremely vast and is expanding infinitely.

In one of my previous post, “Why I Started My Blog In 2022“, I have explained the reasons for starting this particular blog which was mainly to share my notes from my YouTube videos.

I mainly teach Biology for the STPM / Form 6 candidates. I took Form 6 myself and I remembered looking for tuition classes for Form 6 Biology in particular with my friend, Evina. We did join a class with a good teacher. However, he left after a month and there was no other available Biology tuition classes.

This is because there are very few students who opt to pursue Form 6 as their choice of pre-university course after Form 5. Many opt for the Matriculation Programme, A-Levels, Foundation Programme or even Diploma Programme. In addition to that, the knowledge gap between Form 5 and Form 6 is rather huge and that’s why Form 6 is deemed a scary and difficult programme to pursue and best avoided. However, it was my choice.

Me and my friend tried our best to search for tuition classes but failed. In the end, we proceeded to study on our own and relied on YouTube videos to guide us. After asking around, we discovered that the sole reason why many teachers chose not to provide tuition classes for Form 6 Biology was because the curriculum was too intense and deep. Next, (which is sad but true) many of them simply do not have the interest to take the time to explain and educate due to the depth of the curriculum as some of them were forced to teach that particular subject due to the lack of staffs in their school in my hometown.

Upon entering medical school, I discovered that the topics learnt during Form 6 were repeated during my pre-clinicals, which was my first two years in medical school. It was as in depth as I had learnt it during Form 6. Hence, it was not as difficult for me as it may be for others which was why I was able to pursue a part time job.

Due to my interest in teaching, I decided to start a YouTube channel which is aimed mainly at Form 6 students taking Biology. It would serve as a free online tuition platform for them, thus enabling them to access it anytime within the comfort of their own home. In addition to that, they would be able to access notes from my videos as well as flashcards which I have edited and designed with love.

Teaching comes in various forms and though I know that I may not be able to serve as a school teacher, I believe that it is my duty to be a lifelong teacher in whatever aspects that I may serve in, be it within my family members, towards my peers, educating my patients on their knowledge of the diseases or towards my juniors. Still a teacher nonetheless.

I sincerely hope that my contributions would have a positive impact and would deem useful to those who needs it.
