Malaysia is a beautiful country filled with diverse cultures, ethnicity and religion.
Of course, with great diversity comes vast celebrations and festivals. That’s what I really love during my schooling days because that meant holidays!
Only during the holidays am I allowed to touch and play with my toys, after I have completed all my holiday homework of course. That meant that I could wake up a little later than usual, go on holiday trips with my parents, sleep a little later than usual and of course, play video games!
Oh, how I loved the holidays.
The main holidays in Malaysia where we almost always get a week off is Hari Raya Aidilfitri (Eid Mubarak) and Chinese New Year.
However, none of these are my favourite. My favourite would be Christmas.
Christmas falls in December and in the Malaysian Public Education System, December is usually the end of the academic year similar to summer holidays. Hence, we would get the whole month of December off, sometimes even more before the following academic year commences again.
Christmas is also the only event that my family celebrates. I grew up in a household of mix religions, my father being a Hindu and my mom, a Catholic. However, I have yet to celebrate Deepavali or Thaipusam or even Vishu. Truly, my childhood memories regarding events or festival only ever consisted of Christmas.
In addition to that, most of my wonderful childhood memories happened around Christmas, besides the presents of course, my family hosting a Christmas celebration and visiting my maternal’s family in the Philippines.
Of course, as I grew older, I learn to understand the true meaning of Christmas and just how beautiful it truly is which is why it is celebrated. It is more than just the gift-givings and the whole family coming together. It is something more meaningful and deep.
