There are numerous people in my life, people who I know personally as well as strangers who have made an impact in my life be it huge or small.
As an answer to this prompt, I would like to share a story about a particular tuition teacher of mine who taught me when I was 12 years old.
Growing up, my mother was rather strict towards me in terms of me maintaining my grades. I had to always get straight A’s or even at most, only “1B”, or I would be in for a major disappointment from her. Either that or she would not grant me permission to play with my toys during the weekends or withhold me from reading my storybooks or novels, since I loved reading so much. Either way, I did not like it as I felt that I wasn’t good enough. Hence, I would be extremely stressed out during the examination period. I managed to maintain my grades as per her criteria until well, Grade 4 when I obtained a “C” in my Science mid-term.
Basically, since then, I felt like a lost cause and I was never going to be good enough because I did not get straight A’s even though I was an avid reader and have read the textbook from cover to cover.
Little did I know of course that there is such thing as studying techniques and concepts.
When I was 12, my parents enrolled me for tuition classes as I would be sitting for a major exam at the end of that year. That exam would determine if I would be granted a seat in high-performing schools. My parents of course wanted me to secure a seat in one of those schools in my hometown.
I attended my first tuition class on a weekend with this particular teacher who taught me Science and Mathematics. Sadly, I do not remember her name but I recalled her being strict during the first class. She seemed strict but there was something about her that seemed kind and soft. She didn’t seem like the kind who would butcher you just because you did not complete the homework given by her or did not know how to answer.
She seemed reasonable.
Anyway, she knew my level of performance at school and she took it upon herself to guide me by helping me understand the foundation of each topic and always gave me extra homework. However, I did not despise her for it for though she was strict, she was kind and exuded a motherly demeanour.
Before I knew it, I started performing well in school and I was ahead of my peers in studying the topics. I worked at a fast pace and have already revised and completed the exercises before the class even started on that chapter.
The point is, she guided me to a point where not only did I excel but I was doing it on my own too.
Suddenly, I was a promising student in school and my parents seemed even more proud of me. At that age, that was all that matter to me of course. That and well, my books and games.
I completed my major exam and passed with flying colours and managed to secure a seat in one of the finest high-performing schools in my hometown.
Of course, looking back, that was just Grade 6 syllabus. However, her ability to regain my confidence and even led me to believe in myself again was truly a wonderful thing.
As I mentioned, I do not remember her name but if I could meet her again, I would like to sincerely thank her for she did not know the level of impact she had made in my life out her sincere desire to teach an extremely weak student.
