I Fell In Love With Graphics Designing In Medical School

Reasons why I fell in love with graphics designing in medical school. The Theoretical Doctor.

If there’s one thing that surprises me, it is my ability to dabble into the world of arts.

“Medicine is an art”. Some people would say. For me, Medicine is Maths. You take a bunch of clues given and well, solve the problem to reach a diagnosis and then manage the diagnosis or the problem.

Hence, I wouldn’t really say medicine is an art. Surgery, though, most likely.

But, graphics design and not forgetting, video editing.

If you didn’t already know, I have a YouTube channel. I’m more active in The Theoretical Doctor, however, I used to actively vlog in my personal channel, Jewel Nambiar and Jewel & Sarah.

I started dipping my toes into vlogging after accepting a video project organised by the Faculty of Medicine while I was in medical school. These are the two videos.

It’s a rather simple one but I was quite pleased with the outcome.

Then, the ideas started pouring in and I had many vlogging ideas but little time as studying had to be a priority or I would get lost in it.

The application I used then till today to edit my videos is iMovie. I was interested in learning how to use other applications but it seemed rather complicated and though learning how to use it would be a good move, I just could not prioritise it.

During the COVID-19 Pandemic, I took on several designing projects for UTWC (Under The White Coat) and even took on the responsibility of editing the covers for the magazine.

I must say, I love letting my ideas flow. I’m not a professional and I know that there are courses available in university for this or maybe I take delight in things easily or that I’m an easy person to please. Thus, I surprise myself with the outcome of my editing or even my ideas.

Next, I took on the responsibility of editing the Yearbook for my batch and my senior’s batch.

I am extremely proud of these 2 designs. More so, my batch’s. I love it.

There were a lot of memories behind the creation of these Yearbook. Many of which I will hold on to dearly for a lifetime.

Moving on from my university life, I’ve continued graphics designing and I continue to edit cover photos for my articles to be posted on Pinterest.

Granted, they’re rather simple and can be improved, but I do not want to spend too much time on designing as I’m working on a project called the “2-Year Plan”, as I await my placement in internship or housemanship.

In addition to that, I continue to design the slides I use in my videos on YouTube, The Theoretical Doctor and also continue to design flashcards which I’ve uploaded on my Pinterest account as well as YouTube Shorts and Instagram Reels.

I do not know where this journey will take me. Maybe it was just a skill that was necessary to learn so I can dabble with it during my free time. Inevitably, one that I enjoy and had the most fun with.

As I write this article, it took me down memory lane, relieving experiences that seemed as if it happened yesterday when in actual fact, a number of years had passed since then.
